- Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) A combination of retinal (Vitamin A) and palmitic acid, which is found in palm and coconut oil. Retinal is important for maintaining healthy eyesight, but also contributes to healthy skin by helping turn immature skin cells into healthy adult cells. In its role as an antioxidant, it helps prevent by-products of oxidation from causing cellular damage.
- Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2)Vitamin D can be made when certain wavelengths of light strike the skin. It has been recognized for many years for its role in forming strong bones and teeth, and is essential for health.
- Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)Vitamin E is found in spinach and almonds, and has been shown to help protect the skin against the harmful UV radiation of the sun.
- Aloe Vera Aloe vera is a succulent plant which studies suggest prevents skin moisture loss.
- Lanolin is a special kind of wax derived from sheep's wool. It has a significant and long-lasting effect on skin smoothness. It also helps prevent water loss through the skin, which helps keep the skin from drying out. It has been shown effective in helping to heal dryness, flaking, scaling, and cracking of the skin, and helps relieve pain and itching.
(Steel, LB Joseph, NA Langley, AM Kligman, TJ Stoudemeyer and M Christiansen, 7th Congress of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis, Copenhagen, 912 June 2004) - Mineral Oil A lightweight oil that helps moisturize the skin and prevent water loss, it has the added advantage of being non-pore-clogging.
- Glycerin is a compound which helps prevent skin dryness with its moisturizing properties. It works by helping to draw water into the skin.
- Propylene Glycol is used in everything from aircraft de-icing agents to concert fog machines, propylene glycol attracts water and functions as a moisturizer to enhance the appearance of skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.
- Sorbitol is made from sugar, and helps moisturize the skin by preventing water loss.
- Purified Water is the stuff of which moisture is made, and is an essential component in any moisturizer. Without water, there'd be no moisture for your skin to absorb.
- Sodium Hydroxide is used to control pH balance, to keep things from becoming too acidic.
- Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycol Stearate and Stearic Acid are emulsifiers, which is a fancy way of saying they help hold all the other ingredients together, keeping them from separating. Like how glue keeps macaroni art stuck to construction paper.
- Methylparaben and Propylparaben are preservatives which help prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria. These help keep your jars of udder balm from becoming gross and germy.
- This may not be a comprehensive list, and not all ingredients may be in all products. This is a general reference only.
Original Udder Balm History
Udder balms have been around for over 100
years, one of the most successful farm formulations being a petrolatum
or petroleum jelly based product. A new petrolatum free formula was
developed over 35 years ago using aloe vera and lanolin, and Original
Udder Balm moisturizing cream was born.
Originally developed to help protect dairy
cows sensitive udders from the extremes of weather, including heat,
cold, sun, rain, and snow. It was originally used by dairy farmers to
soften and protect cows udders which would dry, chap and crack under the
severe conditions making milking painful and difficult.
For many years farm families knew that the
secrets of soft smooth skin was in that jar of udder balm out in the
barn. Eventually word moved off the farm of how wonderful this product
was on peoples skin, and many other people discovered its fabulous
properties and it moved from the farm into the home. Now it can be found
on many store shelves, and doctors offices around the country!
Original Udder Balm is so good, that there
are many knock-offs out there. Some have even claimed to have the
“Original Udder Balm” reformulated in some way, but they do not have,
nor have they ever had our formulas!
There is only one “Original” Udder Balm has
has no equal! And there is nothing like it for soothing and
moisturizing dry and cracked skin. No other bag balm or salve has the
unique blend of Aloe Vera, Lanolin, and Vitamins A, D & E. So if it
doesn’t have the blue and white label with a cow, it’s not Original
Udder Balm.
Some folks still call Original Udder Balm
‘utter balm’, ‘udder cream’ or ‘udder butter’ and that is ok, as long as
they go home with the good stuff, and not some knock off!
